when you're wrong, you feel it

concede it, can't live it like that
There were many things Nadia knew she was not good at.

She wasn't great at ballet, as she had dreamed as a teenager. She wasn't good at creating original artwork and establishing a name for herself as a painter, she was doomed to reproduce the masters.

She knew she wasn't great at letting people in and she wasn't good at baking, either.

But the Violet knew she had many strengths too. And being a mother had been one of her proudest achievements. And she'd considered herself one of the greatest... most of the time.

She supposed she had to face the facts: she didn't offer her daughter a classic, wholesome family. She kicked her father out and only sees him for his money - when he has it. And she limits her daughter's interaction with him, telling herself it's for her benefit.

Nadia knows a child needs both it's parents, no matter how shit they are. But she just can't let this screw-up have so much liberty with her child. His antics drive her mad, he's irresponsible and rash and doesn't think much. He brings out the worst in Nadia, always such passionate rage.

His latest dumb actions one day make her start throwing and smashing stuff around while there's no one home. In the aftermath, cleaning the mess she made, she sees the targets have been mostly whatever had to do with him: anything he touched, anything he saw or commented on. Between it, there's one of her daughter's mechanical toys, a gift from him. It's so ugly but she loves that stupid toy so much. It's some kind of superhero or who knows what cartoon character, riding a motorcycle just like her father, and the toy hovers around like a drone, a wink to his stuntman job. Or it did, before the Violet took a paddle to it.

She sits and looks at the broken toy in her lap, feeling guilt. She knows it's not the toy’s fault at all and her daughter loves it not for what it is, but for who it's from.

With a sigh, Nadia turns on her datapad and begins searching through orange and green ads.

Then, after setting an appointment, she continues to gather the broken pieces from all around the living room.

Several hours later, she finds herself on her way to the toy workshop. Was it even a full workshop? It didn’t really look like it from outside, Nadia had almost missed the building entirely. But indeed there was a bell at the door – or the 4066 equivalent of it.

There seemed to be no one inside, at least in the front room, at the desk. There was nothing else to do but just to look around, and indeed there were some interesting, enigmatic pieces around.

Things had been going the speed of light for the past week, at least until Friday rolled around. A day he had off and wasn't on a list to be called in for emergency work, which was rare. Half the time Malcolm tried to sleep in some sort of hell broke loose and brought the angsty Orange in from his day of relaxation, which only made him even more angry.

Now things were quiet. Almost creepily quiet. Mal had settled down in his workshop for the day. His apartment complex, built specifically for Oranges only, had oh so kindly offered to rent out workshops for it's residents.

The workshop wasn't a big space at all but it was big enough for him to do his work in. A small front room that he had turned into a makeshift lobby and a bigger backroom that he kept all of his tools in. Mal's ad had gone up for the day offering to repair something rather specific: children's toys. There were a few reasons for this. First, the man was a bit of a child at heart and enjoyed tinkering with toys. Over the top technological ones such as hover boards to more traditional toys such as wagons, and even robotic pets. Second, most other Oranges wanted to only deal with high paying jobs and repairing toys certainly wasn't that. Last but not least he just liked children in general: seeing their little minds get blown over simple things, or hearing them rant off whatever came to their imaginations. Hoped for his own one day if he could ever get his dating life together.

The brunet was in the backroom with his face flat on his workbench, snoring softly when the buzzer sounded as someone entered his workshop. His head snapped upright to look toward the front room, his cheek lightly smeared with oil from his previous work. "One sec, one sec!" He yelled out as he pulled himself to his feet, ducking under a few hanging parts and entering the front room. Aw, fuck he forgot he had an appointment set. So long as he hadn't kept them waiting then there shouldn't be too much of a problem.

At least that was until he saw just who it was that was waiting in the front. Although he only had a view of her from the side she was pretty lady no doubt. Lovely long hair and a charming face. Mal hadn't quite made up his mind about what he was going to say until his foot slammed into the side of an engine, a sharp hiss escaping as he yanked his foot up to hold it. With a backwards stumble he'd flop back into the wall with some old bike chains rattling before he'd finally get his bearings. "FFFFffffffantastic to have you come in," Mal said through gritted teeth, finally lowering his foot once he was sure he was balanced. "You had the uh, stuntman motorcycle thing, right?" Just play it cool and don't be an ass.

when you're wrong, you feel it

concede it, can't live it like that
Nadia’s hands hovered over objects here and there, almost touching and accidentally slipping a little something in her pocket when she heard the voice yelling out from behind. It didn’t come as a surprise to find someone actually was working there and in a backroom, just as she assumed. And it wasn’t like she came there to steal, especially. It was just a thoughtless habit, which sometimes she didn’t even realize it was happening until it was too late.

Now, the voice brought her back to attention to the present moment, as she was reminded of more rational things. Like finding out what kind person this man was, first, and second – always check for security cameras.

Or someone standing in the doorway – though she did hear the faintest movement approaching, so the Violet quickly relaxed her body in just browsing mode, without turning yet, though. No need to panic, she was well accustomed to pretending that she was doing nothing wrong – and sometimes, like now, it was even true, mischievous thoughts aside.

She did a quick turn when she heard a bump and a pained hiss. She saw a young man holding his foot up, like in cartoons and her eyebrows instantly rose in surprise, empathy and slight amusement. ”Are you alright?” she couldn’t help but rush to ask, a slight note of worry in her tone before her lips pursed into a soft smirk.

”...Yes” Nadia replied to his question after blinking back a couple of times. So he went straight to business. Maybe he was just trying to change the subject quickly, though, she thought he didn’t have anything to be ashamed.

”Mr. Burkhold, right? I’m Nadia” she presented herself as she approached him without rush. He already knew she was who he spoke on the phone to earlier, but still. ”And thing is exactly what that abomination is” she joked about the toy, or appeared to joke, since she actually believed it was a piece of junk. The father had, most probably, picked it from a thrift shop.

Meanwhile, she had offered to shake his hand while introducing themselves. When – and if – he shook her hand back, she would put her other one over his and keep it for an intense moment. ”You cannot begin to understand how grateful I am to have found you” she admitted to him with the utmost sincerity, holding his gaze. ”It has been next to impossible to find someone to help me. You were, literally, the only one. And not only it’s been hard enough to find someone to fix toys – but someone to even bother with such an outdated model? This piece should be in a museum – if not burned” she finished with a chuckle and let him go.
